Grace: The Best Bargain of All

Match making sites are full of people searching for true love; the kind that’s unconditional. Casinos are packed with gamblers hoping to win millions without earning it. Advertisements are constantly promoting ‘free gift with purchase,’ or a ‘no cost consultation.’

Who doesn’t want something for nothing? I’d love to win the lottery, even though I didn’t earn it.

Some people spend way too much time in search of a bargain. But rarely is anything free.

Attaining wealth without earning it often causes emotional problems. In fact, people who win the lottery usually spend it within five years and some studies have shown it can actually shorten your lifespan.

I’d like to think we’re all capable of unconditional love but so often we find ourselves putting demands on it.

There is only one gift that is truly free and so many people miss it because they’re trying to meet their needs with things that are unhealthy or transient at best.

It is God’s grace and mercy.

I don’t deserve God’s favor but He gave it to me anyway, that’s grace. I do deserve God’s punishment for my sins but He doesn’t punish me, that’s mercy.

One of the best descriptions comes from Ephesians 2: 8 & 9:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Another popular definition reads as an acronym: Gods Riches At Christ’s Expense.

  • You can’t find it on a matchmaker site, but it does include ‘true love.’
  • You can’t win it in a casino but it’s value outweighs all the money in the world.
  • You don’t have to buy anything to get it so there’s no  ‘free gift’ with purchase.

But there is a whole lot of added value; eternity with God, and love that never ends.
