I don’t deserve God’s favor but he gave it to me anyway, that’s grace. I do deserve God’s punishment for my sins but He doesn’t punish me, that’s mercy.
God’s mercy and grace can take away the guilt-shame bondage that keeps us bitterly trapped in our past.
Hebrews 4:16 tells us we can confidently accept Gods love, compassion, forgiveness, and help for our troubles.
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16).”
Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and because of His great compassion for our struggles (which He also endured), He died on the cross for us. He took our guilt, shame and sin to the cross with Him.
“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).
Our guilt and shame died with Him. But He rose again, victorious over its power and giving us access to the Father through Himself. Therefore, our guilt and shame are dead so we should stop carrying it around with us and let him have it all!
- Am I still carrying around shame from my past?
- What scares me about letting it go?
- Do I believe I can be forgiven?
